Navigating Difficult Conversations https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/what-if-my-parent-refuses-to-move-navigating-difficult-conversations https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/what-if-my-parent-refuses-to-move-navigating-difficult-conversations Tue, 23 Jun 2026 17:39:06 +0000 https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/what-if-my-parent-refuses-to-move-navigating-difficult-conversations#comments
When the Person You Love Says “No” to Moving into an Assisted Living Facility

One of the hardest moments for adult children is realizing their parent may not be safe living alone and deciding it’s time to move them to an assisted living facility. Hearing that parent then refuse makes that decision even more difficult.

They might be missing medications, be more forgetful, fall more often, feel more isolated, or struggle to keep up with daily tasks. Moving to an assisted living community may seem like the obvious solution. But your parent might feel like that would mean losing their independence, their home, and a life they have spent decades building.

If your parent refuses to move, you’re not alone. Many families deal with this. These conversations are rarely resolved in a single discussion and typically take several thoughtful conversations built on trust, patience, and empathy, making the change easier for everyone involved.

There are several ways that you can make these conversations easier and help your parent feel more comfortable before moving to an assisted living community.

Understanding Why Your Parent is Resisting Assisted Living Care

Before discussing solutions, it helps to understand how your parent is feeling.

Many older adults fear that moving to assisted living means giving up control over their lives. Others worry about leaving a home filled with memories or becoming a burden to their family. Financial concerns, anxiety about change, and misconceptions about senior living communities can also play a role.

What may sound like stubbornness is often just fear.

When adult children focus solely on practical concerns, they may unintentionally miss the emotional concerns that matter most to their parents.

Start with Listening, Not Persuading

It seems easy to just launch into a list of reasons for why the move is necessary or declare the matter settled, but it’s better to start by asking your parents questions.

Ask them:

What concerns you most about moving?

What do you enjoy most about living at home?

What would an ideal living situation look like for you?

What are you afraid might change?

These questions help your parent feel heard rather than pressured. They also provide valuable insight into what is truly driving their resistance, allowing you to actually help them make the transition instead of ignoring them.

Many experts recommend focusing first on understanding your parents' perspective before discussing potential solutions.

Focus on What Actually Matters Most to Your Parent

A common mistake families make is approaching the conversation from their own concerns and not their parent's priorities.

While safety may be your primary concern, your parent may be thinking about very different things. They may want to maintain friendships, continue enjoying hobbies, avoid feeling like a burden, or simply spend less time worrying about household responsibilities.

When discussing senior living options, try to connect the conversation to what matters most to them. For example, if they have become isolated at home, focus on opportunities for social interaction. If maintaining the house has become physically demanding, discuss how having help with daily responsibilities could free up time and energy for the activities they enjoy.

When seniors can see how a move may support their independence, comfort, and quality of life, they’re more open to considering the possibility.

Introduce the Idea Gradually

Very few people become comfortable with a major life change overnight. Instead of asking your parent to commit immediately, consider smaller steps:

Tour an assisted living community together.

Attend a community event or family gathering.

Schedule a lunch visit.

Talk with residents who have already made the transition.

Explore respite care or short-term stays if available.

These experiences often help replace assumptions and fears with firsthand knowledge.

Know When Safety Takes Priority

While many concerns can be discussed over time, some situations require more immediate action. In those situations, it’s important that your parent becomes as comfortable as possible, but it may be sooner than either of you’d like.

If your parent is experiencing frequent falls, wandering, significant memory loss, medication mismanagement, poor nutrition, or unsafe living conditions, the conversation may be more urgent. Safety concerns should never be ignored. If that’s the case, focus on specific examples rather than general worries when discussing these issues.

Instead of saying:

"You're not safe anymore."

Try:

"I'm worried because you've fallen twice this month, and I want to make sure you're protected."

Specific observations often feel less accusatory and more supportive.

How Palm Cottages Helps Families Through the Transition

At Palm Cottages, we understand that moving to assisted living is an emotional decision for both seniors and their families. There’s a list with more amenities, more residents roaming the halls, and more activities fill a monthly schedule.

But most people don’t realize that larger communities sometimes create the very thing families are trying to avoid—loneliness.

For seniors, connection isn’t about how many people are around. It’s about how easy it is to truly belong.

The Hidden Problem with “More” in Larger Facilities

On paper, large senior living communities seem ideal. They offer full calendars, dining options, and plenty of social opportunities. But in reality, those benefits can quickly become overwhelming.

In a bigger setting, it’s easy for seniors to:

Feel like just another face in the crowd

Struggle to form meaningful relationships

Withdraw instead of engaging

Research shows that a lack of meaningful social connections plays a major role in seniors' isolation. Being surrounded by people isn’t always enough to guarantee social connection.

When seniors don’t feel seen or known, they often stop trying, and their quality of life and overall happiness drop.

Why Social Isolation is a Problem

Loneliness isn’t just emotional. It’s also physical. Studies have found that social isolation in older adults is linked to:

Increased risk of depression and anxiety

Cognitive decline

Chronic health issues

Even shorter life expectancy

Strong social connections are directly tied to better overall health and quality of life. That means the environment your loved one lives in plays a critical role in how they feel every single day.

What Happens When Assisted Living Communities Feel Too Big to Belong

In larger communities, the things that seem great can quickly become the biggest problems, blocking your loved one from getting comfortable and feeling at home.

Quickly, even simple things can become barriers:

It’s harder to build relationships among dozens, or even hundreds, of other residents

Staff can feel stretched thin when caregivers have a larger load and interactions become more task-focused

Activities can feel impersonal when large groups overpower individual interests or comfort levels

It’s easy to disappear, especially for those with mobility issues or quiet personalities

The Power of Smaller, Cottage-Style Living

Now imagine something different. A smaller, more personalized approach to assisted living communities.

A place where:

Caregivers know your loved one by name—and their story

Neighbors feel more like friends than strangers

Daily life feels familiar, not overwhelming

Smaller, home-like communities like Palm Cottages are intentionally designed to create a sense of belonging, not just residency.

With fewer residents, seniors are more likely to:

Build genuine relationships

Participate in activities comfortably

Receive personalized attention

Feel recognized and valued

This kind of environment naturally encourages connection without forcing it.

A Different Approach to Senior Living

Assisted living should do more than provide care. It should support a life that still feels full. At Palm Cottages, the focus isn’t on being the biggest—it’s on being the most personal.

Our cottage-style communities are designed to feel like home, where every resident is known, supported, and connected.

We believe in something simple: no senior should ever feel lost in the crowd.

Learn more about Palm Cottages, and see if our small, cottage-style community is right for your loved one.
When “Wandering” Becomes Dangerous: Signs Your Parent Needs Memory Care https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/when-wandering-becomes-dangerous-signs-your-parent-needs-memory-care https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/when-wandering-becomes-dangerous-signs-your-parent-needs-memory-care Fri, 13 Feb 2026 20:29:58 +0000 https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/when-wandering-becomes-dangerous-signs-your-parent-needs-memory-care#comments
Wandering is one of the most frightening and misunderstood symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. What may start as a harmless habit of pacing or even stepping outside for “just a minute” can quickly turn into a dangerous situation for seniors living with memory loss.

If your parent or loved one has been diagnosed with dementia or is showing cognitive decline, recognizing when wandering moves from manageable to unsafe is crucial.

Know and understand the warning signs so you can take action before a crisis occurs.

What is Wandering in Seniors with Dementia

Wandering refers to aimless or disoriented movement, often without awareness of time, place or personal safety. A senior may leave their home, forget how to get back, or move into unsafe areas without realizing the danger.

Common triggers include:

Confusion or memory loss

Anxiety or agitation

Searching for something—or someone—from the past

Changes in routine or environment

Overstimulation or fatigue

While wandering is common in dementia, it should never be ignored.

Why Wandering is So Dangerous

Even a few minutes alone can result in serious harm. This is often the moment families realize that home may no longer be the safest place.

When wandering, seniors are at risk of:

Getting lost and unable to ask for help

Exposure to extreme heat, cold, or storms

Traffic accidents or falls

Dehydration or exhaustion

Injury from unsafe environments

Other Common Dementia Symptoms to Watch Out For

Wandering isn’t the only dementia symptom you need to watch out for. There are other signs that could be precursors to more severe wandering or that they might require additional care or supervision.

You should also watch out for:

Confusion about time or place

Getting lost in familiar places

Increased restlessness

Attempts to leave the house at odd times or for errands they don’t need to run

Why Home Safety Measures aren’t Enough

Many families try to manage wandering with door alarms, locks, or constant supervision. While these tools can help temporarily, they often:

Increase anxiety or agitation

Fail when caregivers need rest or work

Become overwhelming for family members

Caring for someone who wanders is emotionally and physically exhausting, and it’s okay to acknowledge when you need additional support.

How Memory Care Facilities Provide Safe and Supportive Solutions

Memory care communities are specifically designed to protect residents who wander while still honoring their independence and dignity.

Key benefits include:

Secure, monitored environments

Trained caregivers available 24/7

Structured routines that reduce anxiety

Calm, familiar settings that feel like home

Activities designed to engage the mind and body safely

Rather than restricting freedom, memory care channels movement safely—allowing residents to walk, explore and socialize without the risks they’d face at home.

How Palm Cottages Can Help

At Palm Cottages, our memory care neighborhoods are thoughtfully designed to feel like real homes—not institutions. While this may seem great for your elderly loved one, do they qualify?

Most Common Assisted Living Requirements

Assisted living requirements vary from facility to facility. With different campuses and services come different resident requirements. However, several requirements can be found at most facilities.

Common Assisted Living Facility Requirements

Age at least 65, but special circumstances may allow younger residents

Assistance or supervision is needed with some activities of daily living

Enjoys a group setting for meals and activities

Financial ability

Palm Cottages’ Assisted Living Requirements and Restrictions

At Palm Cottages, our clinical team, along with the resident’s primary care physician, will complete an assessment to determine if the potential resident’s needs can be met by our facility. Our residents are required to participate in their care but may still need assistance or supervision with activities for daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming and medication management. Residents must eat daily meals in the shared dining space of their cottage and should participate in some social activities throughout the month.

Some care requirements may exceed Palm Cottages’ state licensing; it is important to discuss all needs at the time of the assessment so the best care plan can be determined.

We also offer memory care services for those with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Potential residents for these cottages would undergo the same assessment. Often, residents of these cottages benefit from the extra security of the locked doors to deter wandering. Other residents benefit from the higher care staffing ratio, allowing even more attention and time to provide services for each resident.

After Your Tour of Palm Cottages

After you tour with the administrative team at Palm Cottages and decide our facility would be the best fit, we will have a member of our clinical team schedule a time to screen the potential resident and discuss the care needed to confirm that they will be appropriate for our community.

Once the placement is approved, the clinical staff at Palm Cottages will connect with the resident’s primary care physician to confirm the medically required care and complete state-required documentation prior to a scheduled move-in.

Apply for Assisted Living at Palm Cottages

If your loved one qualifies for our assisted living facility, schedule a guided tour to see our facility.
8 Ways to Pay for Assisted Living https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/8-ways-to-pay-for-assisted-living https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/8-ways-to-pay-for-assisted-living Thu, 18 Sep 2025 02:56:01 +0000 https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/8-ways-to-pay-for-assisted-living#comments
Paying for an assisted living facility can be challenging. The cost of care can be quite high, and sometimes, it isn’t budgeted for early enough, especially when fixed incomes come into play. Several options and strategies can make paying for an assisted living facility more manageable,

1. Personal Savings and Retirement Funds

Many people use their personal savings and retirement funds to cover the costs of assisted living facilities. Additionally, they often contribute their pensions to these living costs.

If started early, these savings can cover the majority of facility costs.

2. Social Security Benefits

Another common method is to use social security benefits to cover a portion of costs. While this can cover part of the expenses, people’s typical payments will not cover all costs.

This payment method is best used with another strategy.

3. Long-Term Care Insurance

Long-term care insurance is another great option to help cover some of the costs. This insurance covers things not typically covered by health insurance. It’s perfect to use toward assisted living facilities alongside other senior care options.

It’s crucial to purchase this insurance well before the need arises as policies can become expensive with age or pre-existing conditions.

4. Veterans’ Benefits

The Department of Veterans Affairs may offer Aid and Attendance Benefits to military personnel and their spouses.

5. Selling or Renting Property

As a senior is getting ready to leave their home and move into an assisted living facility, their house is often left vacant. This empty house can become a way to pay for assisted living. Someone can pay for their new living costs by selling or renting out this house.

6. Reverse Mortgage

For seniors who own their home, a reverse mortgage can provide funds by borrowing against the house’s equity. This is only an option if one spouse remains in the home, as the borrower must continue living there to qualify.

7. Family Contributions

In some cases, family members may make contributions to help pay for assisted living facilities. This can be done informally or through more structured arrangements like a family care agreement.

8. Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

For low-income seniors, SSI may provide additional financial support for assisted living, but it usually doesn’t cover all costs.

Reviewing Your Budgeting Options

There is no one or correct way to pay for an assisted living facility, and its often good to choose a few options. Additionally, financial professionals are a great resource to go over options and manage your finances.

Once you have determined how an assisted living facility will be paid for, it’s time to find the right facility.

Learn about Palm Cottages
Assisted Living Activities https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/assisted-living-activities https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/assisted-living-activities Thu, 18 Sep 2025 02:55:54 +0000 https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/assisted-living-activities#comments
Ways to Help Your Aging Loved One Stay Happy, Healthy and Active

As we age, it often becomes difficult to stay active, both physically and socially. Consider an assisted living facility like the one at Palm Cottages.

Learn about our facility today.
When to move to an assisted living facility https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/when-to-move-to-an-assisted-living-facility https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/when-to-move-to-an-assisted-living-facility Thu, 18 Sep 2025 02:55:45 +0000 https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/when-to-move-to-an-assisted-living-facility#comments
The National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) reveals over 835,000 Americans reside in assisted living facilities today. Assisted living is an ideal option for older persons who need help with daily activities such as medication management, keeping house, cooking, going to the bathroom, and keeping appointments. These facilities provide the safety and security of 24-hour support and care that one wouldn’t get at home or a retirement community. If you are wondering when the right time to take a senior member of is the family to an assisted living facility, here are a few signs:

More Help Is Needed with Daily Activities

Consider an assisted living facility if your loved one needs more help with daily activities, including bathing, dressing, mobility, or medication management. These activities can be stressful and overwhelming for the elderly.

Fortunately, assisted living facilities offer professional help with everyday tasks, including medication management, cleaning, bathing, vacuuming, and more.

Feelings of Loneliness or Isolation

Having an active life is crucial to the health and happiness of an older adult. Being alone most of the time could lead to depressions in seniors. Assisted living facilities offer a structured social life which is hugely beneficial to the members.

Alongside the positive interaction with caregivers, seniors in assisted living also get opportunities to make new friends and engage in social activities with other community members.

Safety Worries

If you are worried about the safety of a senior family member, consider assisted living. When mobility is limited, it can get complicated for the old to get out of bed or move around the house by themselves. Maybe you are worried about what will happen if they fall and can’t get up or get immediate help. Assisted living facilities coordinate around-the-clock care for their residents. The staff monitors residents to ensure they get immediate assistance when they need it.

Tired of Responsibilities

There are myriads of demanding responsibilities that come with living with a senior. Daily chores and home up keeping can trigger significant stress for caregivers and ailing seniors. Assisted living provides a home-like atmosphere for your loved one while taking care of all the cooking, cleaning, shopping, and laundry activities.

Lack of Proper Nutrition

Nutrition is one of the top reasons for considering an assisted living facility for a senior family member. In most cases, seniors lack the energy or resources to do grocery shopping. Besides, cooking their meals could be a challenge for ailing older persons. Lack of proper nutrition can have adverse effects on their health. Assisted living facilities provide adequate nutrition for their members, including three chef-prepared meals, diverse nutrients, and ingredients, fresh fruits, healthy snacks. They also offer the option to choose a special meal plan, for example, diabetic diets.

Transportation Challenges

If your loved one has trouble driving or can no longer drive, consider moving them to an assisted living. Public transportation and other alternatives may not be easy for the seniors, meaning they will increasingly become housebound. Luckily assisted living facilities provide transportation so the seniors can go to any place they want to be without relying on friends and family.

Aggressive Behavior

Some seniors, especially those with dementia, can behave aggressively or violently. If you have tried several ways or medications to reduce this behavior with little success, it means the senior is becoming a danger to themselves and everyone else. Assisted home facilities monitor the elderly for aggressive behavior and provide proactive help to minimize the risks of occurrences.

Risks of Getting Lost

If the senior is constantly trying to leave the house, thus increasing the risk of getting lost or injured, it is time to move them to an assisted living facility. Ideally, many seniors with conditions such as dementia often get ideas to go to specific places. Unfortunately, the damage in their brain means they may not know how to get there or come back home. Assisted living facilities are well secured to give you peace of mind knowing your loved one is safe and well taken care of.

Get Professional Help Today

Feeling stressed and overwhelmed from the demanding responsibility of caregiving can be expected. And it doesn’t get easier with age. If you’re helping an elderly loved one look for where they’ll spend the next several years of their life and call home, you may have noticed several options available that all seem to blur together after a few hours of searching.

What’s the difference between an assisted living facility and a nursing home? Plus, what’s classified as senior apartments? What are memory care facilities?

What are My Elder Care Options?

Here’s an easy guide to help you find the best place for your aging loved one and their needs.

Your main options are:

Senior Apartments

Assisted Living Facilities

Memory Care Facilities

Nursing Homes

The main distinguishing feature between all four of these options is the amount of care and oversight provided.

1. Senior Apartments

Designed for active seniors who are still able to care for themselves in most cases, senior apartments create a sense of community around peers their same age. Senior apartments offer the least amount of care and therefore offer the most independence

Despite the high level of independence residents experience, some apartment communities offer some amenities that do make lives easier for them. These can include meal service, transportation and organized social activities to promote community.

2. Assisted Living Facilities

Assisted living facilities provide more care than senior apartments, but facilities like Palm Cottages, still work to offer as much independence as possible for each resident. This style of facility is the right choice when daily tasks are becoming a challenge for your loved one, offering a balance between care and independence.

With personalized care, private living spaces, and a vibrant social environment, your loved ones can embrace their golden years to the fullest.

3. Memory Care Facilities

These facilities are specialized in caring for seniors with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. They are prepared to handle the safety concerns of residents with these conditions and offer activities and medical care geared toward these groups. In memory care facilities like the one at Palm Cottages, each resident receives personalized attention from staff trained in dementia and Alzheimer’s care.

4. Nursing Homes

Similar to assisted living facilities, nursing homes provide round-the-clock care. Where they diverge is that nursing homes focus on medical care and conditions that require consistent care. These types of senior living solutions are idle for those who need more care than an assisted living facility but don’t require that personalized memory care.

These facilities sometimes go beyond daily assistance and offer rehabilitation services for those who’ve had a long-term illness or severe heart attack that requires more personalized care before returning home.

Continuing Your Search for Trustworthy Senior Housing

If you’re looking for an assisted living facility or a memory care facility, learn more about Palm Cottages. You may even use them interchangeably, as synonyms. Both are residential care facilities focused on providing help to elders. But what makes them so different?

An assisted living facility is focused on caring for seniors, aiding them in their daily activities such as bathing, dressing and taking required medications. They also typically have private rooms or apartments while maintaining access to medical care.

In contrast, nursing homes provide seniors with more extensive medical care, providing skilled and certified nursing care, 24-hour monitoring and medication management. There tends to be less independence and less privacy than assisted living facilities while offering care to those with more significant health concerns or disabilities.

Which is Right for My Loved One?

When your loved one can no longer stay at home but needs another level of care, it’s important to find the right type of facility. They need to be at the forefront of your mind. Think about your loved one’s needs.

Opt for an assisted living facility if your elderly loved one only needs a little assistance with daily living but wish to maintain independence.

Look for a nursing home if your loved one requires more intensive medical care and supervision.

Does My Loved One Need Memory Care?

Some assisted living facilities have a specialized memory care unit for residents with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. These facilities have trained staff and specialized activities tailored to the unique needs of these residents. The specific care provided will vary by facility.

These assisted living facilities with memory care create a safe and supportive environment for these residents, while providing opportunities to be social.

Nursing homes, while providing extensive medical care, are not specialized toward these diseases. Here at Palm Cottages, we can understand the confusion. They both seem to mean similar things — after all, don’t the elderly live in both? While we get that the two seem to be synonyms, we want to clear up the confusion once and for all, and lay out the differences between the two.

Retirement Home

A retirement home often refers to a set of rooms or suites that are part of a larger building that houses multiple residents. Oftentimes, these premises require all occupants to be past a certain age, which usually starts around 55. Retirement homes may offer a number of facilities on the grounds, including pools, spas, kitchens, and recreational areas, such as tennis or squash courts.

People living in retirement homes are usually independent and don’t need anyone looking after them. For this reason, it isn’t uncommon for there to be no healthcare services available on the grounds, nor medical help working under the home’s employment. Retirement homes are appealing to seniors who want to live in close proximity to people their own age for social reasons.

Assisted Living Facilities

Conversely, assisted living facilities are usually made up of residents who, as the name would suggest, need assistance in their daily lives. Most assisted living facilities have medical staff working around the clock to assist residents who may need help with daily activities such as feeding, bathing, or engaging in recreational activities.

While assisted living facilities might offer many of the same amenities that retirement homes possess, the main difference is that residents usually need help to perform these tasks. Additional services might include laundry, a dining room or cafeteria, and transportation to and from events.

Find what's right for your loved one

If you or someone you know is seeking an assisted living facility, we encourage you to call Palm Cottages. We’d love to explain what our facility offers and how we’re equipped to service our residents.

Contact Us
What is an ECC License? https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/what-is-an-ecc-license https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/what-is-an-ecc-license Wed, 15 Apr 2026 13:56:17 +0000 https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/what-is-an-ecc-license#comments
Extended Congregate Care License

An assisted living facility (ALF) is a group residential establishment designed to provide personal care services in the “least restrictive and most home-like environment” that can be safely allowed. These personal services include activities of daily living and the self-administration of medication and are provided with the goal of allowing residents to remain independent at to hopefully age in place as their health needs increase.

ECC Assisted Living Facility in Florida

In Florida, standard ALFs must be licensed by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). The agency also issues several types of specialty licences, including the Extended Congregate Care Licence.

The AHCA issues an Extended Congregate Care Licence to an assisted living facility that provides additional services that exceed those provided by a standard assisted living facility. Facilities with an ECC licence may provide residents with additional nursing services and offer total assistance with personal care services as well as additional medication administration. ECC facilities are able to accommodate residents that require tube feedings, catheter care and oxygen services.

In order for a facility to apply for an ECC license, it must have maintained a standard licence for two years, and may not have been subject to any administrative sanctions during the previous two years, or since initial licensure if the facility has been licensed for less than two years. New facilities may apply for an ECC license at the time of initial application.

Palm Cottages is proud to be an ECC licensed Assisted Living Facility. Please give us a call or contact us today to learn more about the services we offer and the wonderful community we build for our residents!

We encourage you to view our website to see the benefits of our wonderful assisted living facility!
Mother’s Day Celebration at Palm Cottages https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/mother-s-day-celebration-at-palm-cottages https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/mother-s-day-celebration-at-palm-cottages Wed, 15 Apr 2026 13:54:12 +0000 https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/mother-s-day-celebration-at-palm-cottages#comments
It’s no surprise our Mother’s Day event shared a similar theme with many of the other events we facilitate here at Palm Cottages. When it comes to your loved one, we love to get all the background information that we can. This allows us to create a custom care plan that tends to all of our residents’ needs. Whether it’s a specific medicine routine, or just their favorite hobbies, be sure to inform us so we can set your loved one up in the most comfortable environment possible.

The care and health of our residents is our number one priority. Each of our residents may receive assistance with the administration of their medications, and with the help of our partner pharmacy, we will also order and manage the delivery of their medications. They will also have at their disposal assistance with hygiene, grooming, bathing, and toileting, as well as a weekly housekeeping and laundry service. Palm Cottages also has on-site a beauty salon and nail technician, a movie theater, and optional medical services. Additionally, there are also daily recreational activities, including lunch outings & shopping trips.

Why do we put so much emphasis on personalized care? Great question. The simple answer lies in the fact that your loved one is an individual, and deserves to be treated like one.
How to choose an Assisted Living community https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/how-to-choose-an-assisted-living-community https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/how-to-choose-an-assisted-living-community Wed, 15 Apr 2026 13:50:00 +0000 https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/how-to-choose-an-assisted-living-community#comments

You or your loved one has decided it’s time to research or even move to an assisted living community.

You or another family member may have come to visit Mom or Dad for the holiday and noticed a change. Perhaps they seem a bit sad, they have lost some weight, or they are not taking their medication as prescribed. You may have noticed they are having more difficulty with walking or balance. They may be having difficulties with driving or have had accidents. Do they appear fearful or angry? This may appear to be an overwhelming task, and one you may not have ever planned to need.

Now what?

The following guidelines may be helpful:

Decide where you want to look

Are you interested in a particular town, city or region? Do you want to be within a certain driving distance from loved ones? Use these factors to identify the geographic area you are searching in. Is the community close to highways, health care and your interests? Does the community offer transportation to physician offices or have a physician available at the community, as you age or may not want to go to physician offices?

Palm Cottage Assisted Living and Memory Care is a uniquely designed neighborhood of eight cottages. Each cottage is designed much like a home, with a living room, dining room, kitchen, den, and bedrooms. It is located close to I-95 in Rockledge, Florida. Transportation is available to physician offices, and some physicians come to the community.

Research communities in your geographic area

What specifically are you needing? Be specific in your search—do you want assisted living versus other types of senior housing, such as independent living or nursing homes? If you do not find assisted living in your area, you might want to expand your search slightly. As you research, be aware that Florida offers four different licenses. Each license is specialized care. Not all assisted living communities offer the same services, care and staffing. The differences are quite substantial.

Palm Cottage has a Standard and Extended Congregate Care license, which means that care can be provided to the highest level of assisted living in Florida. Most care can be provided and you or your loved one may be able to remain at one location without having to move again.

Identify your must-haves and nice-to-haves

Amenities vary from community to community, so it’s important to know your priorities before you start touring facilities. Most communities offer dining, housekeeping, and transportation, but some offer perks like on-site salons. Will you have frequent visitors? Make sure guest parking is available. Is it important to have small hallways and easy access to dining, activities, and health needs? Is a park-like neighborhood important? Will you need therapy and exercise to remain as mobile and healthy as possible?

Palm Cottage offers chef-prepared meals for the cottages. Our residents enjoy waking up to the smell of bacon on the stove and meals with a small number of friends! Walking to the dining room is just a few feet away, which is such an advantage compared to long hallways and elevators. Our park-like neighborhood with benches, streetlights and beautifully manicured lawns is appealing to the nature lover.

Sit down with your finances

First, establish your income from all sources, including family support, Social Security, pensions, 401(k) s, etc. Then look at owned assets such as homes, cars and property, minus the amount owed on these items. Identify your monthly expenses above and beyond what assisted living will provide. With these pieces of information, you can quickly determine what level of assisted living you can afford. Ideally, you will want to consult an independent financial advisor or a trusted family member/friend to help you determine what you can afford. Plan for the future. Does the community offer Medicaid if needed at a later date? Does the community have a professional available to answer your questions about insurance or Medicaid?

Palm Cottage’s experienced and knowledgeable professionals can provide guidance on available resources, including VA Aide and Attendance benefits, and answer basic questions.

Contact your physician

Be sure to contact your physician to assist with the next step in choosing the right care for you or your loved one. You will need a physician's evaluation for any care services.

Palm Cottage will assist you in working with your physician to acquire needed assessments and orders.

Read the fine print

Once you have identified your top choice and your budget to cover it, you will be ready to take the next step. Always be sure to read contracts and terms carefully to make sure you are getting the best value and quality of life for your money.

Assisted living is a great option for seniors who need some support but still want to maintain an independent lifestyle. Congratulations on taking the first step toward researching and or choosing a community that is right for you or your loved one!

Palm Cottage is available to answer any questions you may have regarding the types of senior care available, as well as the steps needed to acquire care and services.

Contact: Sandy Richards, Palm Cottage Assisted Living and Memory Care, Sales and Marketing Director at 321-633-1819 for a tour and to answer your questions regarding assisted living options.
Our Assisted Living Facility Events https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/our-assisted-living-facility-events https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/our-assisted-living-facility-events Wed, 15 Apr 2026 13:30:25 +0000 https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/our-assisted-living-facility-events#comments
At Palm Cottages, we don’t like to do the same old boring routine every day. At Palm Cottages, our memory care team provides care for your loved one in a secure setting. We place full trust in our highly experienced team of memory care professionals.

Dementia comes in several forms. One of the most common cases we treat is Alzheimer’s disease. The more intense the Alzheimer’s disease is, the higher the level of commitment and care we give the individual. If your loved one suffers from Alzheimer’s and/or dementia, it is evident that they will eventually require 24/7 supervised care in the right setting here at Palm Cottages.

Why Trust the Memory Care Facility at Palm Cottages

Our memory care facilities have specific areas that are wander-proof. A typical symptom of memory impairment is aimless wandering, and we ensure that our residents are safe at all times in our community. Our memory care residents often require assistance with medication, hygiene routines, and other daily tasks.

Memory care is not something we take lightly here at Palm Cottages. We focus heavily on safety while providing the highest possible quality of life.
The Truth About Assisted Living https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/the-truth-about-assisted-living https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/the-truth-about-assisted-living Wed, 15 Apr 2026 13:07:55 +0000 https://www.palmcottagesfl.com/blog/the-truth-about-assisted-living#comments
Choosing an assisted living facility can be a bit overwhelming for families, which is why we want to provide the most accurate information about what assisted living really is.

1. Your loved one will still have privacy and independence.

Privacy and independence are equally important when it comes to the quality of your loved one's life. Both of these luxuries will be preserved when you choose the correct assisted living facility. Our cottages provide secure, private, high-quality single-floor living. Each resident has their own secure room to relax and enjoy time on their own.

2. Our staff cares as much as your family.

Our 24-hour staff is committed to providing the highest level of safety and security for your loved one. Our facility aims to eliminate the worry that can easily arise for families shopping the assisted living market. Here at Palm Cottages, we are known to be the “bed and breakfast” of Central Florida’s assisted living community, and we couldn’t be any happier about that!

3. Your loved one can still partake in their favorite activities.

As unusual as this sounds, when living in a community, our seniors tend to be more active and energetic than they were when living alone. Our facility caters to the wants and needs of our residents. For example, one of our residents, Lou, has been a boxer his entire life and wanted to continue enjoying the vigorous sport. To maximize his quality of life, we hung a speed bag right outside Lou’s cottage. He trains weekly!

This shows that Palm Cottages will fight to help your loved one continue living their passions.
