A retirement home often refers to a set of rooms or suites that are part of a larger building that houses multiple residents. Oftentimes, these premises require all occupants to be past a certain age, which usually starts around 55. Retirement homes may offer a number of facilities on the grounds, including pools, spas, kitchens, and recreational areas, such as tennis or squash courts.

People living in retirement homes are usually independent and don’t need anyone looking after them. For this reason, it isn’t uncommon for there to be no healthcare services available on the grounds, nor medical help working under the home’s employment. Retirement homes are appealing to seniors who want to live in close proximity to people their own age for social reasons.

Assisted Living Facilities

Conversely, assisted living facilities are usually made up of residents who, as the name would suggest, need assistance in their daily lives. Most assisted living facilities have medical staff working around the clock to assist residents who may need help with daily activities such as feeding, bathing, or engaging in recreational activities.

While assisted living facilities might offer many of the same amenities that retirement homes possess, the main difference is that residents usually need help to perform these tasks. Additional services might include laundry, a dining room or cafeteria, and transportation to and from events.

Extended Congregate Care License

An assisted living facility (ALF) is a group residential establishment designed to provide personal care services in the “least restrictive and most home-like environment” that can be safely allowed. These personal services include activities of daily living and the self-administration of medication and are provided with the goal of allowing residents to remain independent at to hopefully age in place as their health needs increase.

ECC Assisted Living Facility in Florida

In Florida, standard ALFs must be licensed by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). The agency also issues several types of specialty licences, including the Extended Congregate Care Licence.

The AHCA issues an Extended Congregate Care Licence to an assisted living facility that provides additional services that exceed those provided by a standard assisted living facility. Facilities with an ECC licence may provide residents with additional nursing services and offer total assistance with personal care services as well as additional medication administration. ECC facilities are able to accommodate residents that require tube feedings, catheter care and oxygen services.

In order for a facility to apply for an ECC license, it must have maintained a standard licence for two years, and may not have been subject to any administrative sanctions during the previous two years, or since initial licensure if the facility has been licensed for less than two years. New facilities may apply for an ECC license at the time of initial application.

Mother’s Day Celebration at Palm Cottages

As usual, we laughed, we dined, and we celebrated quality time spent together. Palm Cottages gets personal. When it comes to your loved one, we love to get all the background information that we can. This allows us to create a custom care plan that tends to all of our residents’ needs. Whether it’s a specific medicine routine, or just their favorite hobbies, be sure to inform us so we can set your loved one up in the most comfortable environment possible.

The care and health of our residents is our number one priority. Each of our residents may receive assistance with the administration of their medications, and with the help of our partner pharmacy, we will also order and manage the delivery of their medications. They will also have at their disposal assistance with hygiene, grooming, bathing, and toileting, as well as a weekly housekeeping and laundry service. Palm Cottages also has on-site a beauty salon and nail technician, a movie theater, and optional medical services. Additionally, there are also daily recreational activities, including lunch outings & shopping trips.

How to choose an Assisted Living community

You or your loved one has decided it’s time to research or even move to an assisted living community.

You or another family member may have come to visit Mom or Dad for the holiday and noticed a change. Perhaps they seem a bit sad, they have lost some weight, or they are not taking their medication as prescribed. You may have noticed they are having more difficulty with walking or balance. They may be having difficulties with driving or have had accidents. Do they appear fearful or angry? This may appear to be an overwhelming task, and one you may not have ever planned to need.

Now what?

The following guidelines may be helpful:

Decide where you want to look

Are you interested in a particular town, city or region? Do you want to be within a certain driving distance from loved ones? Use these factors to identify the geographic area you are searching in. Is the community close to highways, health care and your interests? Does the community offer transportation to physician offices or have a physician available at the community, as you age or may not want to go to physician offices?

Palm Cottage Assisted Living and Memory Care is a uniquely designed neighborhood of eight cottages. Each cottage is designed much like a home, with a living room, dining room, kitchen, den, and bedrooms. It is located close to I-95 in Rockledge, Florida. Transportation is available to physician offices, and some physicians come to the community.

Research communities in your geographic area

What specifically are you needing? Be specific in your search—do you want assisted living versus other types of senior housing, such as independent living or nursing homes? If you do not find assisted living in your area, you might want to expand your search slightly. As you research, be aware that Florida offers four different licenses. Each license is specialized care. Not all assisted living communities offer the same services, care and staffing. The differences are quite substantial.

Palm Cottage has a Standard and Extended Congregate Care license, which means that care can be provided to the highest level of assisted living in Florida. Most care can be provided and you or your loved one may be able to remain at one location without having to move again.

Identify your must-haves and nice-to-haves

Amenities vary from community to community, so it’s important to know your priorities before you start touring facilities. Most communities offer dining, housekeeping, and transportation, but some offer perks like on-site salons. Will you have frequent visitors? Make sure guest parking is available. Is it important to have small hallways and easy access to dining, activities, and health needs? Is a park-like neighborhood important? Will you need therapy and exercise to remain as mobile and healthy as possible?

Palm Cottage offers chef-prepared meals for the cottages. Our residents enjoy waking up to the smell of bacon on the stove and meals with a small number of friends! Walking to the dining room is just a few feet away, which is such an advantage compared to long hallways and elevators. Our park-like neighborhood with benches, streetlights and beautifully manicured lawns is appealing to the nature lover.

Sit down with your finances

First, establish your income from all sources, including family support, Social Security, pensions, 401(k) s, etc. Then look at owned assets such as homes, cars and property, minus the amount owed on these items. Identify your monthly expenses above and beyond what assisted living will provide. With these pieces of information, you can quickly determine what level of assisted living you can afford. Ideally, you will want to consult an independent financial advisor or a trusted family member/friend to help you determine what you can afford. Plan for the future. Does the community offer Medicaid if needed at a later date? Does the community have a professional available to answer your questions about insurance or Medicaid?

At Palm Cottages, we don’t like to do the same old boring routine every day. We like to put some flavor into our residents’ lives by hosting several fun-filled events. Whether it's an in-house event or something a bit more adventurous in the community, we make memories consistently.

We host a variety of events, but our residents' favorite is happy hour. On a weekly basis, we will set up the clubhouse in a party-style and allow our residents to consume certain alcoholic beverages alongside their favorite snacks. This makes for the perfect social event for your loved ones to mingle, as our staff caters to their every need.
